Here is the background. Skip if you do not care - Our plumber told us when he cut a section of the main pipe that exits the waste out of the house (the soil stack) it had severe buildup. So bad that he did not feel comfortable hooking up the new plumbing until we had it cleaned.
So one day, several weeks ago (pre loosing our running water in the kitchen), the water backed up until water would not go down the kitchen drain. That week was when the kitchen sink was being ripped out. We were told and after some research that cleaning the plumbing with a water jet (which was the recommended method) would be $1000-$2000 dollars.
So we called a company - Plumbing and Bath Plus. A guy came out on Saturday. He recommended that we have the line snaked and not to use the waterjet. He started out at $1300 and we got him down to $700. He worked for about 20-30 minutes, cleared the clog, ran water to show the drain was clear, and he left. We were dumbstruck to be honest. It was such a huge amount of money for a little amount of time and we honestly knew the minute he left, we were ripped off but what could we do? The line was cleared but we knew the problem was not solved.
Fast forward to this week - we get our toilet, two sinks and dishwasher hooked up. We use the kitchen sink (after all of the mishaps) and after washing dishes the main stack access area was leaking and we could feel the back-up of water. So we now really knew the problem was not solved. We called Roto Rooter. A guy came out and told us it would be $998 for the first 2 hours and $498 for each additional hour. He suspected that our job would range between 3-4 hours. This would include a camera, snaking, water jet, etc. . . .whatever it would take. But that is $1700 - HOLY SHIT!!! So I sat and talked to this guy, told him about the previous company, gave the slight sob story about this past year and he said call me after hours and maybe I could help you after hours. Fast forward till today and he came and did the job for $1000. We watched the camera and our plumbing was unbelievably backed-up. Thank god we did it! We would have had some major issues.
You may ask what about the other company. I have already started conversations/fighting with them about there service. I will be calling again tomorrow. I am going to do whatever I can to fight them. BTW - I only included costs here because I want other people to know about what to do if they are ever in this situation.
Here are the pics . . . . .
The water jet machine
The camera view of our clogged pipes
He worked on this for 3.5 hours
Disgusting mess.
Other house happenings . . . .
The drywaller was back to mud the basement. The "crew" fixed the leak in the kitchen, water to the dishwasher and draining, and some miscellaneous stuff.
Jay and I worked on some our projects. He put a new toilet into the upstairs bath. We pressure washed the back patio and front of the house / patio. Jay took down the old shutters. And I decided to trim a lot of our bushes in the backyard. This is not really renovation related but we are having some bug problems. The gnats are crazy in the back and this is an area our exterminator said was a breeding ground for bugs.
So out came the trimmers . . . . .
This was a pic from when we moved in . . .
Trimmed back. PS - you can see the new windows too!
This is how much was trimmed . . .
I am hopeful for a good week this week. We are so close and could be done for the most part but things are just going so slow.
On the family front, we did do some housework but we went to Christy and David's on Saturday night for an amazing dinner. Went to the pool this afternoon and hung out alot too!
